Hi I’m James. I live and breath photography, it is my life.

My childhood playground of the Scottish countryside gave me the greatest exposure to the wild and constantly changing weather that Scotland offers. It also taught me to appreciate the elements and respect the land. I learnt patience from the landscape and the fleeting light. Hours spent waiting for the right shot, but not a second wasted. I’ll do whatever I can to capture my picture, whether that’s facing sleet or dazzling sun, crossing coastal cliffs or hiking up rugged mountain ranges – the memories that hang on my walls are framed by adventure. 

Scotland still inspires me with its captivating landscapes, weather and wildlife. It’s enthralling and equally as challenging. The light here is a dream and it’s a pleasure to live and work here. 

However, I also have a second home I’m equally as enthusiastic about – the Faroe Islands. Although not as native as my Scottish roots, I have a strong connection to the Faroe Islands as my partner is Faroese. I’ve been lucky enough to get to know the islands through a local’s eyes and experience first-hand the photographer’s paradise they present. 

When I’m exhausted and have captured the best shots I can, just like when I was a child, I return home for dinner and start planning the next big adventure. And I hope you’ll do the same.

Equipment I RECOMMEND

Equipment is important, its our tools to create and having reliable equipment when out on location is priority. I often endure the harshest of weather to create my photographs and if that equipment is not up for the task, it risks my ability to create. Below are the companies that I trust. They are the companies who make the equipment that I know will not let me down. But it’s not just in the field that they have to be strong, customer service when something needs fixed or replaced is key.

Camera system:

Nikon: I use Nikon D810 cameras, 20-35mm, 24-70mm, 70-200mm & 90mm Macro.

Tripods:

Gitzo, Having reliable tripod it paramount. I have used many tripods in the past but since buying Gitzo in 2018 I have never needed another. The build of these tripods is incredible, they will endure the harshest of conditions.  https://www.gitzo.com/uk-en/

Filters:

Nisi, are realitvly new to the photography world. Founded in 2005 they have grown stronger and stronger. They filter holders are tough and can take a beating while their glass filters are world class. Their filters give quality and no compromise with:

  • No colour cast and very low reflectivity

  • No vignetting

  • Water and oil repellant coating

  • High quality lens grade, optical glass

  • Compatible with third party Holder Systems (2mm thickness, 100mm wide)

  • Gasket protects against light leaks

Fine Art printing:

I am a big fan of printing. For me, printing a photographs and hanging to display is the final destination for my photographs. When someone holds a printed photograph makes that image come a live. That person can live that moment and imagine themselves being right there with you.

Printing at home: I print at home with a Canon Pro-1000 and I use a range of quality papers from FotoSpeed such as:

FotoSpeed Platinum Baryta 300 Signature Paper

FotoSpeed: NST Bright White 315 Signature Paper

Print Lab: When I want to go bigger than A3 or produce something that I can’t at home, I use the The Print Foundry.  They knowledge on printing is vast and they customer service is outstanding. They will not only help you pick the right paper for your photograph but they also make sure the colours are perfect. When your prints are delivered, the boxes are perfect to present to any clients.
